What We Are About
Building Blocks to Achievement
Our story
Arlene started with Irish Setters in 1971. While living in NH, she dove deep into obedience training, attended a vast array of training classes and seminars and learned from the country’s most renowned teachers. She then started instructing obedience classes while eager to continue learning all about canine wellness, nutrition, puppy rearing and behavior. In 1992, she became a judge for United States Temperament Testing Association and had also joined the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Since then, she has approved many dogs and handler teams to go on and register for this organization. Through the years, she has owned many successful Irish Setters in the show ring including Champions and Grand Champions. Arlene has earned many titles in breed, obedience, agility, rally, and canine good citizen. Showing in AKC, CKC (Canada) and UKC. Arlene is a long time member of the ISCA (Irish Setter Club of America). She authored her DVD “The Ultimate Start Puppy Program” from Day 3.
Setterwoods Dog Training opened in 1996 with the goal of bringing canine education to the people of Southwest Virginia. Classes offered include Home Companion 1 and II. Private lessons are available upon appointment. AKC, CGC (Canine Good Citizen) and trick dog testing available for dogs seeking to earn these titles. Breed handling, competitive obedience, rally, agility, hunting and track all start with foundation skills taught at our facility. SWDT offers grooming and selective boarding services.
